Today PAAWS RI started working on helping cats at a new location. A nice family had been feeding their neighbors’ cats for some time. They knew the neighbors and the cats’ names. As some indoor/outdoor cats will do, the cats visited many local properties looking for a few delicious treats.
All was well until one day, a new cat showed up with five kittens in tow. None of the cats were tame; they would shy away from people so the family couldn’t touch them. They called around to various organizations, but no one offered them any help catching the cats to get them medical care.
Eventually, they found Hope Cat Rescue, who sent their trapper to the location to round up the mother cat and her kittens. This involved an entire day of setting the live traps, baiting the traps, and waiting for each cat to show up for food. But finally, all were safely trapped with care.
The cats were then brought to PAAWS RI for treatment.
Each Cat Received Treatment
- Physical Exam
- Distemper and Rabies Vaccines
- Topical Medication to Kill Fleas, Ticks & Intestinal Parasites
- Spay or Neuter Surgery
- Ear Tip
Since the cats are not socialized to people, they cannot be adopted through a shelter or rescue. However, the family agreed to take all six cats back to their property. They are building an outdoor shelter for them and have agreed to provide lifelong care for them.

Success Story
One of the female kittens, Nikki, is currently being treated for pneumonia. As the runt of the litter, she may not have survived the winter without medical care. Once she is feeling better, she will also receive her spay surgery.
Without our intervention, these four female cats would have gotten pregnant in the spring, adding dozens more kittens to the already overwhelming cat overpopulation crisis that fills local shelters to capacity.
