PAAWS RI HISTORY
PAAWS RI was formed in December 2011 to address an unmet need within Rhode Island’s companion animal population. We are an approved 501(c)(3), non-profit program that receives no state, city, or federal funding. All of our critical, life-saving funds come from generous donors who believe in our mission statement.
The need to form this nonprofit was highlighted through the work of the low cost animal hospital, Care For Animals. As Care For Animals sought to provide medical care to shelter animals, feral cats and to cats and dogs owned by low income pet owners, it became clear that some animals were not getting adequate – even minimal – care, because of budgetary shortfalls.
Care for Animals interfaced with many RI nonprofits that distribute funds to animals in need. But these limited, combined donations were still not enough to provide animals with adequate medical care, surgical services and rehabilitation. PAAWS RI was formed to meet this need. All funding will be directed to help feral cats, homeless dogs and cats in need of medical care and rehabilitation before they can be adopted and animals belonging to impoverished pet owners.
The mission of PAAWS RI is to provide services to Rhode Island’s most vulnerable populations of animals, through two specific programs.
The first part of our mission is to maintain a shelter/rescue program. Stray and abandoned animals have limited options for treatment through traditional veterinarians and shelters. PAAWS RI will fill this gap with our shelter / rescue program and provide these homeless animals with shelter, medical care and rehabilitation. Once these animals are returned to optimal health they will be adopted out to their forever home.
Many cats and dogs are suffering with easily treatable problems because affordable veterinary care is unavailable. We will fill that void with our program to provide funding for medical and surgical services. Recipients of these subsides will be animals belonging to low-income pet owners and shelter groups. Services include preventative and sick animal care, surgical and dental procedures, vaccinations and spay/neuter surgeries.
